Beijing
Corporate attorneys with overseas law degrees and bar admission with strong language skills are in great demand both from law firms and corporations. Government relations is another growing area as is the area of compliance and corporate governance. Project finance and capital markets are also areas showing major growth.
Shanghai
Shanghai is the designated financial centre of China. The opening up of the financial services sector to foreign investment and the increasing sophistication of the financial markets in Shanghai mean that lawyers in the financial sector with expertise in banking, securities and capital markets, insurance and asset management, investment banking and private equity are, and will continue to be, in great demand. In addition, Shanghai’s traditional manufacturing base requires the services of many corporate/commercial lawyers. Most clients recruiting for China would require Chinese language capability. The exceptions are clients who have moved their regional Asia Pacific headquarters to Shanghai – some senior legal positions in these companies who have a regional role covering not only China do not require Chinese language capability.
